Our mission and vision
The Accolage non-profit organisation supports and promotes mutual aid at the local level. It encourages small acts of support between neighbours, fosters social connections within neighbourhoods, and actively coordinates these local networks. Accolage aims to strengthen social cohesion within communities and promote interaction between generations and cultures.
Through these actions, Accolage contributes to supporting older adults and people in situations of dependency. Its objective is to strengthen their autonomy and self-esteem so that they can continue living well, as independently as possible, within their familiar environment. In doing so, Accolage advocates for the full recognition of the place of older and vulnerable people in our society.
Context: vulnerability as a multi-dimensional challenge
Brussels is known for being a relatively young city. Nevertheless, the absolute number of older adults is expected to continue increasing in the coming years, rising from 156,000 to 180,000 by 2030. In the Belgian capital, around 51,000 older adults at high risk of vulnerability live alone and have little or no social network. This number is expected to grow significantly in the years ahead.
Increasing life expectancy and population ageing mean that many older people may find themselves in vulnerable situations. This vulnerability manifests itself across several interconnected areas that often reinforce one another.
