1Toit2Ages: Building Connections Between Generations
Founded in 2009, the non-profit organisation 1Toit2Ages brings together students looking for affordable accommodation and adults aged 50 and over who have a spare room in their home. In exchange for affordable housing, students provide a reassuring presence during the evenings and nights.
For older adults, this creates an enriching experience that helps reduce loneliness, encourages companionship and meaningful conversations, provides a greater sense of security, enables them to remain in their own home for as long as possible, and offers a supplementary source of income.
For students, it provides an affordable and original housing solution that supports academic success while giving them the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with older generations—almost like finding new grandparents.
Two types of intergenerational co-living arrangements are available:
- one in which students provide around five hours of support per week in exchange for very low housing costs;
- another requiring no specific services, while still offering the older adult a reassuring daily presence and a modest additional income.
Throughout the entire co-living experience, 1Toit2Ages carefully selects and supports both students and older adults to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Over the past 17 years, more than 6,500 intergenerational pairs have already taken part in the programme.
And what about you?
Our mission
To reduce loneliness among older adults while facilitating access to affordable housing for students.
Our vision
A society where generations support, inspire and enrich one another.
We firmly believe in this vision and work every day to make it a reality.
Festive events organised by the association—such as game afternoons, intergenerational dinners and cultural outings—strengthen these bonds and encourage meaningful encounters between generations.
